Carved by Wood - A Brief History of Sunny Wood -- the Man Behind the Whale

June 5, 2015 - Rebecca Nimerfroh

Sunny Wood's whales have almost as much personality as the artist himself. Each hand-carved whale varies in its detail, much due to the reclaimed wood from which it was carved. His work hangs in island homes and restaurants, and on the wall at the Nantucket airport, eyeing you as you wait to board your flight. Take a look at the monstrous three-dimensional piece that says hello as you walk into the Haul Over downtown.

Some would say that spotting one of these whales around the island is like recognizing a friendly face. Now Sunny's wooden whales can be viewed in the new Samuel Owen Gallery on 46 Centre Street, with an opening reception this Friday, June 5 at 6:00 pm, located in the Seven Seas building.
