David Yarrow
Southwest of Midland, Texas, the Permian oil basin is coated in green from its well-irrigated agricultural land. Yarrow was drawn to the horizontal skyline and the pump jacks stretching to the horizon, a striking juxtaposition against one of the world's great oil reserves. Photographing a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville in the late afternoon light, he composed the scene with the symmetry and spatial distancing of Andreas Gursky's Rhine, evoking the visual language of the film Green Book. The result is a study in pure Americana, set against the backdrop of the Permian Basin's cotton fields and oil derricks.
