The Roaring 20s captures the soft backlight of a West Texas evening, a stillness Yarrow found unusually easy to work with in a region more often shot in hard, clear light. The image continues his exploration of women in industries long dominated by men, drawing on the story of Emma Summers, who in 1893 used $700 earned from piano lessons to buy half ownership of an oil well and built it into a business producing 50,000 barrels a month, earning her the title "Oil Queen of California." Yarrow built the set from an archival photograph of an early oil derrick, casting model Kelsey Merritt as his Landwoman.
