A different kind of composition: Moby brings his photos to Greenwich

Singer, songwriter and DJ Moby, who grew up in Connecticut, is expected to be in Greenwich, Thursday, March 15, when a exhibition of his photography opens at the Samuel Owen Gallery, 378 Greenwich Ave. The opening reception will run from 6 to 9 p.m., with the first hour devoted to a book-signing of 'Destroyed,' Moby's first photography book. Others might have missed it, at least in terms of its ability to be a muse, but for Moby a strange little sign in an equally weird hallway was worthy of a click of the shutter. "For a while, it was just a photograph that I liked," said the singer, songwriter and DJ of the image that serves as the cover to his first photography book, "Destroyed."
The photo shows a rather barren view -- a long white hallway at LaGuardia Airport in New York City broken up by an electronic message board displaying the final word of the warning "unattended luggage will be destroyed." "Somehow, the photograph and name summed up how I felt about the music and the pictures," Moby, 46, said during a recent interview. "It's what I wanted the book and record to be. "It was about the strange, disconcerting exhaustion of living in an airport and breathing recycled air and eating strange food," he added. "It was about living in this synthetic environment." "Destroyed," which was published last year to coincide with the release of his 10th album of the same name, features images taken by Moby as he toured the world. Pictures of densely packed fans are interspersed with moments of solitude and sparsity.
